A Forgotten Land.

I have regularly visited Lac De Guerledan near Mur De Bretagne in the last few years. Usually I have had 20+ children with me as part of a school trip. The lake is a beautiful peaceful place, ideal for kayaking, sailing and canoeing. On each visit I have heard about how the lake was formed back in the 1920's. Originally the Nantes, Brest canal flowed through the valley following the course of the River Blavet. Once the dam was constructed in 1930 the source of the river was trapped and the lake formed.
On regular intervals the lake is drained so that the dam can be inspected and repaired.
This year is the first time the lake has been drained in 30 years. It has been empty since April and what is amazing to see is that the land is slowly returning to its past self. The canal locks are visible as are the lock keepers cottages. The canal tow path is clearly defined and grass and wild flowers are re growing.
What is eerie are the skeletons of trees that once grew and were submerged in their entirety.
It has been a privilege to view this lost land. Soon it will be swallowed up again. This time for much longer. Modern technology means that the dam can be monitored under the water much more easily!

The people of this area I am sure have mixed emotions about this place. The lake provides them with cheap electricity from the hydro electric plant. They also enjoy the leisure pursuits on the lake. But a valley is no longer visible to them.
How do you feel about this place. I would love to hear your comments!
